Dear Parents

Welcome to another month at RHPS!

After 20 years as janitor of RHPS Gordon Brown enjoyed a lovely send off last Tuesday. The children shared fond memories and songs at a special assembly and presented him with their gifts before leading him through the quad for a final farewell amidst huge cheers. Following this colleagues held a special reception in the staffroom to wish him well.  Gordon was very touched by your lovely gifts and wishes me to pass his thanks on to you for the cheque and beautiful clock he received from parents and children.  His cheery face and good work will certainly be missed around the school. Gordon is soon to take up a janitorial post in West Lothian, where he now resides. In the meantime we are fortunate to have the services of Emil Nowakowski as the school janitor.

PORTOBELLO ART EXHIBITION

Children in primaries 4-7 classes have been creating their visions of a new Portobello High School for an art competition open to all cluster primaries which has been organised by PHS students. There will be an exhibition of all the art work in Portobello Town Hall on May 23rd and members of the local community are warmly invited to come along and enjoy the creations. Sir Tom Farmer is providing prizes for some of the lucky winners.

P1 ENROLMENT FOR OUTWITH CHILDREN

Parents of primary 1 pupils starting school in August, who live outwith the school catchment area and have recently had a place at RHPS confirmed, should contact the school to make an appointment to enrol their child for school. Enrolment for these children will take place on Thursday May 8th.

WINTER

I really hate the wind and rain,

It makes me sad, it’s such a pain,

I much prefer the Summer sun,

When I go out and play and have some fun.

In the Spring the flowers are nice and bright,

The moon doesn’t come out till later at night,

PERSONAL LEARNING PLANS and final summary reports will be issued early in June.

Please take time to read, comment, and return your child’s PLP and comments’ sheet.

                SCHOOL UNIFORM ORDERS

Order forms are now available for school uniforms for next session. Please make sure that you

get your order in on time. (please remember no monies to school on Fridays). Uniforms will be issued

to children before the end of     session.  Late orders can be collected from school on August

19th between 10.00am and 1.00pm. It is school policy that all children wear the uniform and

items of sports clothing are discouraged. Many thanks for your support.

N.B. Lost property items just seem to pile up more and more. If all items of clothing

were named it would help us find rightful owners.

OUT ABOUT & AROUND

o        The school photographer will be taking Primary 7 leavers’ photographs on Tuesday May

13th. Photographs of Nursery and Primary 1 classes will also be taken.

1 and primary 7 children. Parents of children who require treatment will be notified.

o        Primary 7B will present an assembly this Friday and primary 5B on May23rd to share some of

their wonderful work. Parents of these classes are invited to join us at 11.00am that morning.

o        Primary 1 classes are presenting an assembly on Friday May 30th and of course parents of these

classes are warmly invited to join us at 10.00am.

o        Violinists will be performing for the senior assembly on May 30th at 11.00am. Parents of these

musicians are also invited to join us then.

o        The Nursery class is having a cream tea and sponsored walk on Wednesday June 4th. More

information to come from nursery staff.

o        School Sports are scheduled for Thursday June 5th. P1-3 classes in the morning and P4-7 classes in

o        We are playing host to a group of teachers from Iceland on June 6th. They are visiting Edinburgh to

see schools with very good practice in ECO work.

o        Primary 5A’s Healthy Tuckshop held during Health Week was a resounding success with £125

raised towards their enterprise project and a lovely bird stand and feeders are now in pride of place in

the Quad.

o        Primary 3B’s Enterprise Project is also proving to be very successful. THREEBEES HEALTHY

RECIPE BOOK has so far made £100. There are still copies left. For £2.00 you can have your own –

highly recommended!

o        One of the Art Students from Edinburgh College of Art has started working with Primary 3 classes

on art for the playground – should be exciting!

                SKIPPING IS COOL IN SCHOOL!

As a result of the skipping workshops held during Health Week, skipping has become a most popular

activity during breaks. It’s really encouraging to see good old fashioned skipping  rope games being played.

Walk to School Week takes place across Edinburgh from the 12th to 19th May. This year’s

theme is “Sound Detectives”. Pupils are encouraged to explore their local environment

through sound on their way to school, and choosing the healthy option of getting to

school – walking.

For information about the Active Schools programme contact Colin McMillan on 661- 4459

 or colinmcmillan@parsonsgreen.edin.sch.uk

PLEASE BE REMINDED THAT school starts at 8.55 am and that all children should be in line at this

time ready to start the day with their class mates. Far too many children are trailing in late in the morning and

this has a very poor effect.
